How can I prepare and protect my skin for the colder months in Ireland?

skin care Dublin Ireland laser skin treatments

We hate to say it, but autumn is just a few weeks away.

After a typical Irish summer, the colder months are just around the corner, and it’s that time of year again to prepare your skin for the drop in temperature. During the particularly harsh winters in Ireland, many of us experience drier and redder skin due to the colder temperatures and our increased use of indoor heating which can further deplete the skin’s moisture. This makes it even more important to ensure your skin’s barrier is fully protected before the inevitable colder temperatures return.

At EDIT Laser skin clinic Dublin, many of our clients suffer from skin concerns which tend to flare up more often during the colder months, such as rosacea and thread veins. We use the latest ground-breaking laser technology, the Picosure ICON® laser, to provide our clients with individual treatment plans to best address their specific skin concerns, however it is also important to use simple, at-home methods to further protect and prepare your skin this Autumn, for longer lasting results.

Here are some simple ways to prepare and protect your skin for colder weather:

-Keep your skin hydrated

Keep your skin hydrated by drinking lots of water and by having baths using essential oils. The oils help to bring moisture back to the body and balance the body’s natural oils. This will help to remove dead skin, boost circulation and warm the body. Regular massages are also recommended to maintain hydration in your body and skin.

-Don’t be afraid of oils in your skincare routine

People with oily or combination skin are often afraid that oil-based products will make their skin greasier, but if you use the right kinds of products at the right time of day, they should work in your favour. Water-based products are not actually hydrating, they can actually dehydrate the skin more. Oil-based products, on the other hand, help restore and encourage the production of your skin's natural oils, and they are far more hydrating than many water-based products.

-Keep using SPF

While the sun's rays may not feel as warm or strong on your skin during the autumn and winter, its ultraviolet (UV) rays continue to break down your skin cells at a faster rate regardless of the season. An SPF30 is recommended during those colder, cloudier days, for that added protection. Another added benefit of wearing SPF during the colder months is that it can also help prevent dry skin.

-Get professional laser treatments

Many people tend to think Summer is the prime time to get laser skin treatments, but with extra sun exposure before and after treatments due to the weather, there is a higher risk of unwanted post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

At EDIT Laser skin clinic, our industry-leading laser technology uses directly focusing beams of energy to a single target with the controlled thermal, non-traumatic healing response resulting in smoother, younger, fresher looking skin. The energy used also stimulates collagen and elastin which in turn enhances skin elasticity and imparts a smooth, even, toned look.

We provide treatments for a wide range of skin concerns, such as:

- Rosacea Treatment
- Acne Scar Treatment
- Age Spots & Sun Damage Treatment
- Thread Vein Treatment
