How does laser treatment help Rosacea?

EDIT Dublin Ireland skin rejuvenation

At Edit Laser Skin Clinic, we use the Picosure ICON laser to treat an array of different skin concerns including scarring, pigmentation, sun damage and rosacea.

Rosacea is one of the most common skin concerns amongst Irish men and women and as a result, is one of our most sought-after treatment plans at Edit. The reason for this is because those who are at most risk of developing rosacea are those who are fair skinned between the ages of 20 and 50 years old.

What is ROSACEA?

Before we delve into how our laser treatments can help target rosacea, firstly we need to understand exactly what Rosacea is:

Put simply, rosacea is a common skin condition, mostly affecting the face of fair-skinned individuals. It appears as persistent redness caused by dilated blood vessels, small bumps and pus-filled spots similar to acne. It is a long-term condition that can persist for a long time and fluctuate from mild to severe, across four main subgroups – a doctor can advise on which of these you have.

There are many things that can trigger rosacea to flare up, including alcohol, exercise, high and low temperatures, spicy foods and stress. However, one of the main triggers for rosacea is an impaired skin barrier. Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin that can be seen. It acts like a barrier to stop any harmful bacteria or toxins entering your skin and stops the ‘good stuff’ leaving our skin. Quite simply, if the ‘barrier’ is impaired or damaged the ‘nasty stuff’ will get through and result in a skin condition, whether it be Rosacea, acne or other.

Rosacea Treatment Process

The process of receiving our Picosure ICON laser treatment for rosacea begins with an in-depth consultation to identify our clients’ skin concerns and desired outcome. After the consultation, we carry out a patch test to ensure the client does not have an allergic reaction to the treatment, and 24 hours is needed between the patch test and the first treatment.

During the treatment, the entire skin area of concern is treated to ensure the results are long-lasting. Post-treatment we advise that aloe vera and SPF is applied immediately. It is also important to remember that every client is different, and some may need between 3-6 treatments (these treatments can be carried out 1-2 weeks apart) to ensure the best results are achieved.

Preventative and protective measures

At Edit, we can also use laser technology to protect and strengthen the skin’s barrier. When having a preventative treatment, we advise our clients to stop using topical creams/ointments for one week before undergoing treatment. We further recommend protecting your skin with SPF 40-50 post treatment and to incorporate this into your daily routine to get the best possible results. Ultimately, the key to achieving the best, long-lasting results is to protect your skin from UV rays after your laser treatment.
